When mechanical noise (equipment noise) is heard from facility equipment rooms through with walls and ceilings (or floors), sometimes it is difficult to determine the noise transmission path, whether the noise is transmitted as the air-borne or the structure-borne by vibrations. In such cases, Nihon Onkyo Engineering measures the sound pressure level in the equipment room and in the room where the noise is heard as well as the vibrational acceleration level of the floors, walls, ceilings, etc. The sound pressure level difference between rooms is also measured, if possible.
These results are analyzed to determine whether the noise is transmitted through air or by vibrations, allowing for more appropriate countermeasures.

In order to ascertain the vibration characteristics of a building, the driving-point impedance and transmission impedance are measured. Driving-point impedance is a measurement performed in order to check the vibrational difficulty at the point of the structure and to check the resonance frequency. With driving-point impedance, the excitation point and the response point should be as identical as possible. Vibration is applied using a hammer with a built-in force detector, and the driving-point impedance is obtained by measuring the vibration velocity close to the excitation point.
