When measuring aircraft noise, not only is it important to identify whether the measured noise is from aircraft, but it is also important to identify the source of noises. In other words, noise data must be combined with such information as the airport being used for takeoff/landing, the runway being used, the takeoff/landing direction, and the airline, model, and flight number of the aircraft being measured. Whereas these tasks were conventionally done manually, the DL-TLS takeoff/landing runway determination system provides automation of the tasks with a high degree of accuracy.

Challenges in identifying aircraft noise sources

Areas with multiple conflicting airspaces Generally, when evaluating aircraft noise, linking (matching) recorded operation data provided from an airport with the measured noise of a measurement site makes it possible to verify and evaluate the aircraft using that specific airport. With previous systems, the only way to ascertain this information was to look at the time difference between the departure/arrival time of an aircraft as recorded in the operation data and the time the noise occurred. However, verifying the time difference of noise values observed at 1- to 2-minute intervals at peak flight times with the minute-based operation record was difficult to perform from a location away from the airport. Manually collating information in areas with aircraft taking off and landing at multiple airports also proved difficult. Therefore, automatic identification of aircraft noise sources is demanded. Meanwhile, automated management of information such as takeoff/landing times, runway used, and takeoff/landing direction is difficult even for airports providing the indispensable operation records for identifying aircraft noise sources, leading to a dependency on manual information management, which requires a great amount of effort.

Automatic determination technology for accurate capture of aircraft takeoffs/landings

At Nihon Onkyo Engineering, we developed the DL-TLS takeoff/landing runway determination system with a focus on the transponder response signal waves and radio altimeter signal waves emitted by aircraft in order to not only accurately measure takeoff and landing times but also determine the runway and takeoff/landing direction of an aircraft. The system--which includes automatic takeoff/landing time determination devices installed in locations around airport runways, automatic takeoff/landing runway usage determination devices for located at the ends of runways, and a central data collation device--automatically determines the runway and flight direction used by aircraft taking off and landing at an airport, and records such information as takeoff/landing time and aircraft identification numbers. By doing so, the system enables highly accurate automation of flight information creation and of radar track verification tasks.

Using Nihon Onkyo Engineering's automatic measurement device for unwanted aircraft noise at noise measurement points for an area allows recording of both noise data and the identification number of the aircraft that emitted the noise. By comparing flight information and noise data observed at a measurement point based on the aircraft identification number, automated identification of problem-causing aircraft noise is possible.


DL-TLS systems are being used as continuous monitoring systems at Sendai Airport, Niigata Airport, Tokyo International (Haneda) Airport, Chubu International Airport, Osaka International (Itami) Airport, Kansai International Airport, Kobe Airport, and Fukuoka Airport. They are also being used for short-term measurements for aircraft arriving at and departing form Haneda Airport.
